Caitlyn Wenner has been selected by the Award Committee of Kelly High

school as the DAR Good Citizen for 2011-2012.

Each year

the Col.George Moffett Chapter of the

National Society Daughters

of the American Revolution asks area high schools to name one


senior who best represents the ideals of the DAR;

dependabilitty, sevice, leadreshp and

patriotism.

Many fine Kelly were considered, and our winner

will soon enter the Essay

Scholarship Contest.

Caitlyn will be recognizned in May at Awards Night

and also by the

local DAR chapter.

Congratulations to Caitlyn and her family.



On September 24, fifteen members of the Kelly Varsity Choir

participated in the first round of a grueling 4-round audition process,

trying to earn a chair in the Texas Music

Educators Association 2011-2012 All-State Choir.

By virtue of this Saturday's performances, singing

in this fall's All-Region Choir in November will be

Devin Medley, Jordan Walker, Jared East, David Doucet,

Rell Donina, Evan Kirschner, Leeia Booker, and Josh Barlow.

Next, these students will complete in October against over

350 students from all over Region X for the right to

audition for the All-Area Choir in December.

The final round, for those All-Area singers, will be

in January to determine who will win the coveted

All-State chairs.

Congratulations and Good luck, singers, and

thanks to all who represented Kelly this past Saturday.

Ramses Gonzalez has been named as a Scholar in the

National Hispanic Recognition Program by the The College Board.

The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify academically outstanding

Hispanic/Latino high school students based on their PSAT test

scores and cumulative grade point averages. This recognition

affords the students opportunities for recruitment by major

colleges and universities. Congratulations to Ramses and his family

for his earning this prestigious honor!

On April 5th and 6th fourteen Kelly students attended the

Academic State Meet at Concordia University

in Austin, Texas. Joseph Sigur won second place in Persuasive

Speaking and fifth place in Current Events. Chinodeb Ogbutor

won fifth place in Spelling and Jean-Pierre Vertil won sixth

place in Solo Acting. Our Newspaper, The Pawprint,

won a fifth place plaque. Congratulations to

our students!!!!!



Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School is proud to announce its first time winner

for the 2011 Fireside Catholic Publishing Essay Scholarship. Each year one student

is selected from each high school to participate in the writing contest.

Kelly’s first time winner is Hannah Chapman. She is one of five students

selected from 381 applicants throughout the United States and Canada. Hannah

will receive a $1,000 check and a plaque. Congratulations to Hannah and her

family on this outstanding achievement.

2011 U. S. DISTRICT COURT LAW DAY ART CONTEST FINALISTS

Our Students where chosen from over 82 submissions and 16 schools.

Lexia Knowles won first place in the ceramics show at the Gulf Coast Museum.

Emily Lee took 3rd place in the show. The reception is Sunday from 2-4 pm.


The Law Day Speech Contest was held today at the Jefferson County

Courthouse and three of Kelly’s seniors competed valiantly!!

The competition was extremely close! Salena Parker placed third

and received a $500 scholarship and will be recognized

on Law Day. Joseph Sigur and Ben Yett tied for 4th.

First place was also connected to Kelly –

Mrs. Williams’ son Jordan placed first!!

Each year the MKCHS Science Department has the opportunity to

nominate one outstanding senior to the Carl B. & Florence E.

King Foundation High School Summer Program in Biomedical Sciences. The

student must have pursued and excelled in advanced level science classes at

Kelly. If accepted into the program, the student will have the opportunity to

attend a six-week residential program in Houston at the University of Texas

M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This year’s nominee is Evan DeLord. Evan is

known for his extraordinary academic performance, his many interests and

talents, and his service to his school and community.

Congratulations to Evan and his family on this prestigious nomination!


Congratulations to Kathleen Wilson who was granted a second interview for the

Jefferson Scholars Program at the University of Virginia. Kathleen met with the Houston

Region Selection Committee and was chosen as one of six finalists to be granted a second

interview. Congratulations to Kathleen and her family on her many accomplishments.


The TAPPS Regional Debate tournament was held here at Kelly the weekend of March

26, and three Lincoln-Douglas Debaters and both our Public Forum teams have qualified

to compete in the state tournaments. Joseph Sigur placed 2nd in Lincoln-Douglas and

Salena Parker and Hannah McMahan qualified for the meet in Austin on March 31.

In Public Forum, the teams of Josh Barlow and Ethan Hinds and Salena Parker and

Joseph Sigur qualified for the state meet to be held April 15 in Temple.

Congratulations to all who competed.


Kelly art students competed in TAPPS State recently, and Alexandra Pigno placed 2nd

in painting “Self Portrait”;Ben Peyton placed 6th in sculpture of the “Bolivar Light

House”; Rachel Barron placed 4th in printmaking “LinoBlock Cut” Self Portrait; Emily

Lee
placed 2nd in On Site Seek and Sketch; and Caitlin Clay received an Honorable

Mention in On Site Seek and Sketch. Congratulations to all who participated.

Kelly’s Girls’ Softball team beat Bishop Lynch, last years state champion, by 4-3 at a

recent softball tournament. To date, softball is 2-1 in District. Go, Lady Dawgs!

 

Six Kelly students attended the state meet for the Texas Math and Science Coaches’

Association in San Antonio. Liana Pinson placed 5th in 9th grade science,

Marisa Pinson placed 2nd in 11th grade science, and Nishant Kumar was 6th in 12th

grade science. Marisa was also 2nd in the chemistry section for her grade and Nishant

was 2nd in physics for his category.

Congratulations to all who gave up a weekend to compete.

 

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced a special honor for Kelly

high School senior Madeline Horning. Madeline has been offered the ISP Scholarship.

Winners of Special Scholarships are chosen on the basis of their skills and

accomplishments from a pool of candidates who fulfill the sponsor’s criteria and also

scored high on the PSAT.

Congratulations to Madeline and the Horning family on this

outstanding accomplishment.


Amanda Dick, Joseph Sigur, and Ben Yett competed in the
Southeast Texas

Regional Citizen Bee at Lamar State College – Port Arthur on March 3. Joseph placed 5th

out of a field of 27 contestants. Congratulations!


Congratulations to Kendalyn Rising whose essay entitled “My Angel in the Sky” was

elected as one of the four 2010 Longman Award winners. The Lamar Department of

English and Modern Languages recognized Kendalyn at an Awards Ceremony at the Mary

and John Gray Library on March 29 where she also received a $250 cash award.

The TAPPS Regional Debate tournament was held here

National Merit Competition



Kelly Tops NMA Leadership Speech Contest

Elisha Lalani placed first, receiving $500, and Joseph Sigur placed second, receiving

$250, at the American Valve and Hydrant leadership speech competition

on February 19. The competition was sponsored by “NMA (National Management

Association) ...THE Leadership Development Organization.” Elisha will now

compete at the next level to be held in Houston on March 26th!

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced Kathleen Wilson

has advanced to Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program of

two thousand and eleven by demonstrating through distinguished performance

high potential for future academic accomplishment. Congratulations to

Kathleen and her family.

We are happy to announce that the following students were selected to attend

Camp Enterprise, a one day leadership conference sponsored by the Rotary

Club of Beaumont. Congratulations to Lucas Cook, Morgan Hah, Elisha

Lalani, Gabriella Oxford and Mary Rizk.

Congratulations to the Varsity Choir singers who were awarded first divisions

for Class I vocal solos performed at regional TAPPS adjudication February

19th at St. Pius X, Houston. Rell Donina, Jared East, Fletcher Inzer, Ebony

Johnson, Morgan Meadows, Devin Medley, and Dennis Phelan, all accompanied

by Mrs. Darla Lawless, will now sing for the judges at the State

TAPPS meet in Belton on April 9th. These and over thirty other singers will

perform for region judges in large ensemble, sacred ensemble, and pop ensemble

categories on March first, under the direction of Mrs. Debbie Kea Prihoda

Amy Hooper participated at the TAPPS regional swim meet where she placed


3rd in Division I in both of her events, 50 free and 100 fly. This qualified her for

the state meet in San Antonio on February 11 in both events. In Division I, Amy

placed 4th in the 50 free cutting her time from the regional meet from 26.14 to

25.24. In the 100 fly, she placed 5th cutting her time 4 seconds from the regional

meet from 1:07.33 to 1:03.26. Amy said this was a good way to end her

high school swimming with personal bests in both events. Congratulations,

Amy!

Senior, Kathleen Wilson was among the approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the nation

named as a semifinalist in the 56th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. This

academicallytalented high school senior now has an opportunity to

continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth over $35 million

that will be offered in the spring.Kathleen is “one of a kind”-the

exceptional student that towers above others in commitment,

leadership, academics, personality and service. She is a member of NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, and

the Math and Science Club. She holds an office in Key Club and Yellow Ribbon and is a student

recruiter as well as a Student Encourager. Gifted athletically as well, Kathleen participated

as a Varsity cheerleader for three years. Congratulations to this multi-talented young woman

on another extraordinary achievement!

Congratulations to Madeline Horning who has received notification from the national Merit

Scholarship

Program that she has been offered an opportunity to receive a Special Scholarship. Her interest

in engineering and her selecting Texas A & M or Oklahoma State University have earned her

the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. Congratulations to Madeline and her fine academic

performance at Kelly High School!

 

Salena Parker placed 1st in the American Legion Post

817 oratory/Constitution analysis competition.

She will now move on to the next level of

competition in January! Congratulations, Salena!

 

After having a bye in the first round of the Channel 6 Challenge, Kelly

defeated LCM in 185-155 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Kelly and

West Brook were tied at the end of the game. Jacob Ryall buzzed in first to

answer the tie breaker question and secured the win by a score of 215-195.

Kelly faced PNG in the finals. The teams were tied through the first two

rounds of the compettion. Under the leadership of capain Joseph Sigur,

MKCHS pulled ahead to a 285-110 victory.

he programs will be aired on November 21 at 11:30, December 4 at 11:00,

and December 18 at 11:30 on KFDM TV.

Team members Joseph Sigur, Jacob Ryall, Kathleen Wilson, and alternate Ben

Yett will each receive a $1500 scholarship. Congratulations on a job well

done!


The Pink Club has sold approximately $4,000 in Holiday Shopping Cards and

has raised over $1,000 by conducting various fundraisers on campus

throughout the month of October . A special note of gratitude is not only

extended to the entire Monsignor Kelly community but also the Pink Club

executive board: President, Laura Broussard; Vice President

Michele Morris; Secretary, Helen Gambrah; and Treasurer, Emilie Parma. All of

these proceeds benefit the Beaumont Gift of Life Program.

Congratulations to Kathleen Wilson who has been selected by the Awards

Committee at Kelly High School as the nominee for the Jefferson Scholars

Program at the University of Virginia. Each year Kelly has the opportunity

to nominate one student for this prestigious program. The foremost

consideration is outstanding academic performance coupled with

excellence in national testing, leadership, and school and community

involvement. Congratulations, Kathleen!

Congratulations to Fletcher Inzer, Ebony Johnson, and Jared East

who earned a chair in the TMEA All-Region Choir in recent auditions. Also

placing in the honor choir, with an added chance at the next audition for

the All-Area Choir, are Rell Donina, Devin Medley,and Dennis Phelan. These

six singers will be featured along with other excellent singers

from Southeast Texas schools in a concert at the Julie Rogers Theatre November 9th.

Congratulations to Sophomore Justin Broussard who has been selected to

represent Kelly High School at next summer’s HOBY Leadership Seminar

at Rice University June 3 -5. There are seventy sites across the country

for training hundreds of HOBY young people. Justin was chosen in recognition of his

outstanding leadership potential as well as living the Kelly motto.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program announces the

3100 Outstanding Participants for 2011. These students scored in

the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans

on last year’s PSAT. Kelly High School is proud to

announce that senior student Philomena Baldwin has

received that distinction. Philomena will now enter

the second round of competition for Semi-Finalist.

Congratulations to the new officers for SADD. They are: President,

Phoebe Hambright;Vice President, Amanda Dick; Secretary,


Haley Kinchen, Project Coordinator, Torii Fuhrman; and

Public Relations, Daphne Thammasila.

Congratulations to Zach Clarke and Zuri Prince, who were both named the Boys' and

Girls' Distric Soccer Players of the Year.

They were chosen among all the players in the

District by the Athletic Directors of each school represented in our District. This is a huge

accomplishment for them individually and for us collectively as a school.

Rome Gonsoulin was recently named the winner of the State Bar essay/speech

competition. Congratulations, Rome!`

Elisha Lalani and Josh Barlow each won their divisions of the Optimist Club

Regional competition in Sugarland, completing the second competition on their way to

the final competition May 8. At that time, they will be competing for a $2,500

scholarship. Congratulations for their accomplishments so far and best of luck to each of

these students
